What is real education in today’s world? – It’s time to rethink

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all- Aristotle”

The world is fundamentally different than it was earlier. But, education in India is still the same as it was thousands of years ago. The same old classrooms full of students and all of them learning the same thing at the same speed. Parents worrying about their child’s education and going beyond limits to assure them a bright future. However, in the current situation, things have become more complicated. In the 21st century, the traditional approach towards education has no meaning with the coming up of the internet and new techniques of learning. The world is moving towards artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genetic engineering, automation etc. Parents, teachers, mentors need to rethink the education of students. They should help to make it more meaningful. One such top educator Dr Varun Gupta teaches students great life skills based on practical life experiences rather than just bookish knowledge. In the past, schools used to be the storehouses of human knowledge and learning. But now learning is not just confined to classrooms or books. Knowledge is accessible to anybody who wants it by using the internet.

Schools play a major role in shaping the mindset of children from a very young age. The role of schools should be to inspire students to learn new skills, explore new things, experiment and execute. The ability to adjust and learn something new should be valued. Students should be taught to contribute towards society as well as the whole world.

The real education in today’s world is :

  1. Making students aware of the various options, careers paths available for them to explore. They should not be confined to just a few professions such as a doctor, teacher, engineer, lawyer etc. Rather a curiosity should be built among the students towards the power of the internet, communication, public speaking, designing, art & craft, video and animation etc.

  1. Awareness about the importance of mental health and stability. Teenagers and younger adults should be taught how to recognize the signs of mental health problems, and there should be opportunities for managing mental health crises, including the risk of suicide or self-harm. Students should be given all the knowledge about the relationship between mental health, substance abuse, and other negative behaviours. They should also be made aware of the negative impact of stigma and cultural attitudes toward mental illness.

  1. There should be task-driven active learning sessions for students at schools. Gone should be the days when kids are forced to learn the boring lessons from the same old books. Students should be assigned tasks and given the required tools to complete them. 1. The classrooms and study environment should be redesigned. They should be turned into innovative spaces that motivate students to become curious and creative to learn new things. Children should be given a very comfortable and healthy learning environment at school which helps them to foster creative social interaction with friends.
  2. There should be sessions on health and fitness for students. They should be made aware of the benefits of regular exercise, yoga, meditation, nutritious food, cleanliness and sanitation.

  1. The aim of education should be to make students literate in all core subjects and master a few. It should never be to get an A+ in an exam or score the highest marks in class. For children, being able to find a new way of understanding the world is far more rewarding. Education should give students a broader view that the world is not divided into different subjects. They should be motivated to believe that no subject or knowledge is beyond them. They can learn anything they want.

Thus, to create an innovative future for the younger generations a radical change in the education system is needed. Parents, teachers and students need to work together to bring about this change by appreciating each other’s ideas and trying to apply them in real life.
